To help us process your claim, please have the following information ready:
- Your policy number.
- If the claim is malicious damage or act, theft, attempted theft, burglary or accidental loss, we will require the police report details, along with the police officers name, station address and date reported.
- A detailed account of the events leading to claim (who, where, how).
- An estimate of the loss or damage.
In the event of severe storm damage, contact the State Emergency Service, your local council or us for assistance.
In order to handle, assess or investigate your claim and to allow a settlement of your loss, you will need to provide all relevant information. This includes quotes for the repair or replacement of your property. In addition, you may need to provide us with your permission to inspect the damaged property.
If you receive notification of a claim made against you, immediately forward the claim to us. This includes any demand, writ, summons or proceedings relating to any prosecution, inquest or hearing and all other information relevant to those matters where any liability under your policy may arise.
What not to do
You must not admit responsibility or liability to anyone. Do not offer, agree or promise to settle any claim without our prior consent.
Excluding emergency repairs to prevent or minimise further damage, do not carry out or authorise any repairs or arrange replacement of any property without our consent.
Do not dispose of any damaged property without our consent. We may need to inspect the property and assess the repair costs. Do not wash, clean or remove debris from an area damaged by fire, unless we have agreed for you to do so.
Proving ownership, loss or damage
When you make a claim you may be required to provide proof of ownership and the value of the items you are claiming for.
Acceptable proof of ownership documents include:
- Sales receipts or accounts (originals or duplicates) showing the date, purchase price, a description of items purchased and place of purchase.
- Credit card statements or bank statements showing the transaction details.
- Owner’s manuals or Instruction manuals providing the model and serial number/s of the lost or damaged property.
- Warranties noting the item and payment figure.
- Photos clearly showing the items (e.g. photos of you wearing the jewellery you are claiming for).
- Builder’s, electrician’s or other relevant tradesman’s reports detailing the loss or damage
- Letter from the original supplier/purchaser on a verified letterhead.
- Australian Taxation Office submission, showing depreciation schedule of item.
- Statement from accountant.
- Stat Dec (as a last resort).
